Innate and CQ Bring a New Political Voice to the Web

Newly redesigned site delivers award-winning journalism with state-of-the-art digital appeal.

With the 2008 election cycle heating up to a fever pitch, a redesigned CQ Politics debuted to detail the substance behind the sound bites. Designed and developed by Washington, DC-based CDG Interactive, the site is produced by Congressional Quarterly Inc., the nation’s premier provider of news and analysis on Congress, politics and public policy. With richer reporting, expanded content and advanced digital enhancements — all available without a subscription — CQ Politics is poised to be the leading free site for political professionals, opinion leaders and political enthusiasts.

With CQ Politics’ educated, politically aware audience in mind, CDG Interactive created a streamlined information architecture and a straightforward design to showcase the site’s deep content — which goes beyond the coverage of electoral politics and also focuses on the politics of Congress and the executive branch. The site features articles, blogs, details on Congressional votes, facts and figures about members of Congress, “races to watch” in the 2008 election, and more.

On the technical side, CDG’s developers created a framework to dynamically pull CQ’s content into CDG’s custom content management system (CMS). This approach allowed CQ editors to take advantage of the capabilities of CDG’s CMS while continuing to write and edit content through CQ’s existing editorial procedures.

The technical team also incorporated XML feeds to display items from a variety of external sources, including the Associated Press, selected blogs, and Politifact.com, a site that gauges the truth level of political candidates’ statements.

One of the site’s goals is to encourage interaction and participation among site users by incorporating the latest and most innovative interactive media tools. To meet this objective, CDG integrated social media elements into the fabric of the site. Users are invited to comment on articles, e-mail them, and post them to social media sites such as Digg and Facebook. Users are also able to view the most-viewed and most-emailed stories across the site.
